Staff from Unsworth Medical Centre in Bury have been praised at a recent health awards for the level of care and support they have shown to their patients.

Patients and carers from Bury were asked to nominate members of their GP practice team for a ‘Patient Choice’ award. Hosted by NHS Bury Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), the Bury Awards for Talent and Achievement celebrated staff that had gone the extra mile to make a difference.

The Patient Choice award was one of a number of categories, giving patients the opportunity to show their appreciation for the care and commitment shown to them by any member of their GP practice team, from a GP to a receptionist and beyond.

Patients went to great lengths to send in their nominations. There were a total of 16 Patient Choice nominations received. The nominations were then judged and shortlisted by an independent panel with the winner, and a nominee that was highly commended, being announced at a staff event in December.

The winner of the Patient Choice Award was Paula McCrossan, Practice Manager at Unsworth Medical Centre. Paula received a total of six nominations from patients who commented that her efforts are endless. In addition to managing the practice, Paula has set up a support group for patients diagnosed with dementia and their relatives to keep them engaged and motivated. Paula runs the group in her own time and patients wanted her to be recognised for her endless efforts and the extra time she puts in.

Dr. Hannah Lambert, GP at Unsworth Medical Centre received two nominations and was highly commended in the award category for the compassion and care shown towards patients. Patients praised Dr. Lambert for maintaining regular contact, especially if they have complex needs, and the compassion she shows them.

Dr. Jeff Schryer, Chair of NHS Bury CCG said: “This is the second year that we have held the Bury Awards for Talent and Achievement. The awards were held just before Christmas and were the perfect opportunity for us to step back and reflect on everything that is good about our local NHS.

“Colleagues within the CCG and our general practices are doing some really great work and our awards provided the opportunity to recognise best practice and celebrate success.

“We are very grateful to all of the patients that took the time to complete a nomination form for the Patient Choice award to recognise colleagues that have gone out of their way, putting patients at the heart of all they do and generally making a difference to local people.”

Paula McCrossan, winner of the Patient Choice award and Practice Manager at Unsworth Medical Centre, said: “I would like to say thanks to the patients who nominated me. My practice is very generous, allowing me time and funding so I can do what I do. I love spending time with our dementia/over 65s group.”

Dr. Hannah Lambert, highly commended nominee for the Patient Choice award and GP at Unsworth Medical Centre, said: “A GP’s role is to understand their patient’s health concerns whilst being respectful of their individual circumstances, so I am very pleasantly surprised to be nominated for the award as I see this as part of my duty. I would also like to say thank you for the nomination.”
