Two GPs from GP practices in Bury have been praised at a recent health awards for their care, commitment and going the extra mile.

Patients and carers from Bury were asked to nominate members of their GP practice team for a ‘Patient Choice’ award.

Hosted by NHS Bury Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), the Patient Choice award was one of a number of categories in the Bury Award for Talent and Achievement – fondly known as the BafTAs –  which marked the 70th birthday of the NHS and celebrated staff that had gone the extra mile to make a difference for local patients.

The Patient Choice award provided patients the opportunity to show their appreciation for the care and commitment shown to them by any member of their GP practice team, from a GP to a receptionist and beyond.

Patients went to great lengths to send in their nominations, with many sending in hand written submissions.   The 14 Patient Choice nominations received were then judged and shortlisted by an independent panel with the winner, and a nominee that was highly commended, being announced at a staff event last month.

The winner of the Patient Choice Award was Dr. Stephen Kirkham, a GP at Tower Family Healthcare Tottington.  Dr. Kirkham received two nominations from patients who said he had showed exemplary commitment, compassion and the upmost sensitivity to people going through difficult times.

Dr. Douglas Kyffin, a GP at Ribblesdale Medical Practice in Bury, was highly commended in the award category for providing a strong commitment of care and meeting the needs of individual’s along with their families.

Jeff Schryer, Chair of NHS Bury CCG said:

“The 70th birthday of the NHS this year has been the perfect opportunity for us to step back and reflect on everything that is good about our local NHS.”

“Colleagues within the CCG and our general practices are doing some really good work and our awards provided the opportunity to recognise best practice and celebrate success.”

“We are very grateful to all patients that took the time to complete a nomination for the Patient Choice award to recognise colleagues that have gone out of their way, putting patients at the heart of all they do and generally making a difference to local people.”

Dr. Stephen Kirkham, winner of the Patient Choice award and GP at Tower Family Healthcare Tottington, was born and bred in Bury and trained as a GP locally, graduating from the University of Manchester, he added:

“I was pleasantly surprised when I found out I had been nominated for the award by my patients and thank them for putting me forward. Whilst I am delighted to have won the award, I would like to stress the importance of recognising the work, effort and dedication that everyone puts in whatever their role, it’s always a team effort.  The awards were a great way to motivate people and recognise their hard work.”

Dr. Douglas Kyffin, highly commended nominee for the Patient Choice award and GP at Ribblesdale Medical Practice, said:

“I was delighted to hear that I had been nominated, and receiving the award for being highly commended in the category really is an honour. Every healthcare professional, no matter what their role is, wants to provide their patients with care that is respectful of and individual to their needs. To be told that a patient has taken the time out of their busy day to complete a form and nominate me for this special award means so much.”
