An ever increasing number of people across Bury are embracing the digital revolution and going online to access some GP services – with over 35,000 of patients opening accounts to make the most of the GP online services facility.
GP online services allows patients to:
- Book and cancel appointments
- Order repeat prescriptions
- Access parts of their GP record online.
It’s quick, easy and all information is secure.
This time saving alternative to calling or visiting the surgery allows people to book and cancel appointments online, and for patients with repeat prescriptions, these can also be requested from the comfort of their own home. Electronic prescribing also means that patients who have identified a nominated pharmacy can collect their prescription straight from their pharmacy, saving a trip to the practice.
Online services provides patients with the ability to review the medication they are taking; along with the dosage and frequency it should be taken – leading to an improved understanding of their medication.
Bury is leading the way in relation to ‘digital maturity’ with free NHS Wi-Fi rolled out to all GP practices and a Digital Champion to assist patients that want to find out more about the service in each practice.
The number of patients opening an account for GP online services has steadily increased since it launched in April 2015 with over 5,500 new users registered for the GP online service in 2016 and over 20,000 in 2017. Patients are increasingly using the service to order repeat prescriptions, 51.44% more repeat prescriptions requests were made online in 2017 compared to 2016, and more patients are using the facility to book or cancel appointments. The amount of people using GP online services is expected to increase further as people move away from traditional methods and discover the benefits of online services.
Dr John Hampson, local GP and IT lead for NHS Bury Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) said: “The availability of GP online services is making a huge difference, not only to our patients who are using it to make appointments and order repeat prescriptions, but also to GP surgery staff. It frees up time in practices allowing staff to allocate more resource to patient care. It offers our patients the choice of how they can order a repeat prescription and book appointments, with online requests complimenting the more traditional methods.”
